The most magical thing about a new coat of paint is its ability to switch up your home’s aesthetic, and in certain cases, its overall curb appeal. When it comes to the front of your house, both cases prove to be true. The front door acts as the centerpiece of a home, so while it may seem like a mi...

Colorful life lesson #2: there are a thousand shades of white! I wanted to paint yellow and white stripes in the dedicated playroom of our new home. Picked a soft, pale yellow, already had some white paint leftover from another room -- easy enough I thought -- until I came home to the results. Turned out the white had a blue undertone that when put next to yellow made it look lavender. I knew that every shade of white had an undertone but I took the easy road and hadn't done my homework. Ugh!

One tool I use when selecting a white paint is to compare it to a neutral "control" white with little, to no, undertone. In a pinch, it can be as simple as a sheet of white printer paper. But since that's not a comparison to paint, I recommend using Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace, Sherwin Williams Extra White or Behr Ultra Pure White.

There are a few color mistakes I've made that are forever etched in my mind. The first was not paint related but started my color education. Fresh out of graphic design school and given an opportunity to specify the brand colors for an all-inclusive resort in the US Virgin Islands. I chose gorgeous shades of teal and peach from the Pantone Color Guide but without the printing knowledge necessary to anticipate what would happen to a solid ink when converted to the combination of CYMK (cyan, yellow, magenta and black) "dots" used in printing to simulate color. Two words, sewage and p**p, instead of teal and peach... I also discovered the Pantone 4-color process conversion guide...and didn't lose my job.

The ink on the left is the solid or "spot" color, the ink sample on the right is made using the 4-color printing process.

Has this ever happened to you with paint? That story in my next post!
